President Donald Trump has ordered a massive expansion of migrant detention and deportation across the United States. The announcement, made on his social media platform Truth Social, has sparked widespread controversy and intensified the ongoing nationwide protests against his administration’s hardline stance on immigration.
Trump’s directive, which he described as “the single largest mass deportation program in history,” specifically targets major cities like Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. These cities have been at the forefront of protests since June 6, following a surge in raids targeting undocumented migrants. Trump emphasized his commitment to the operation, stating, “I’ve directed the entire administration to put every resource possible behind this effort.” (Related: GOP proposes deportation of non-citizens convicted of assaulting law enforcement officers during riots.)
In his post, Trump urged federal agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), to take decisive action.
“You have my unwavering support. Now go, get the job done!” he wrote, underscoring his administration’s resolve to carry out the deportations.
The order specifically aims to dismantle sanctuary cities, jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. This move has heightened tensions between federal and local governments, with officials in these cities defending their policies as both legal and humanitarian.
Sanctuary cities have long been a point of contention, with proponents arguing that they foster trust between immigrant communities and local law enforcement, while critics claim they harbor criminals and undermine federal law. Trump’s directive intensifies this debate, as he accuses these cities of being “the core of the Democrat Power Center” and using undocumented immigrants to “expand their voter base, cheat in elections and grow the Welfare State.”
Trump’s announcement comes on the heels of a temporary pause in workplace immigration raids, as reported by Reuters, suggesting a strategic shift in federal enforcement priorities. The decision has already prompted fresh legal challenges, with critics arguing that it violates civil liberties and constitutional protections.
Moreover, the use of military force against domestic protests, as implied by Trump’s call for support from agencies like the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, has drawn sharp criticism.
The “No Kings” movement, which has been organizing protests across the country, has condemned Trump’s directive as an attack on immigrant communities and civil liberties. The movement’s leaders have called for continued resistance, urging supporters to “stand up for the rights of all people, regardless of their immigration status.”
The debate over immigration policy remains as contentious as ever. Trump’s call for the largest mass deportation in U.S. history has reignited longstanding tensions and raised critical questions about the balance between national security and civil rights.
