Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has accused the Democratic National Committee (DNC) of “anointing a candidate hand-picked by elites,” amid President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the presidential race and the ascension of Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democrats’ presumptive nominee. Kennedy has called for a return to an “open process” of selecting a nominee.
During an appearance on Fox News on July 22, Kennedy, who initially entered the race as a Democrat, argued that the DNC made a “strategic mistake” by overtly backing President Joe Biden. RFK Jr. cited various rule changes and the shutdown of primary votes, including in key states like Florida. In this regard, he drew controversial parallels to elections in Russia after Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race. “A few weeks ago, President Biden was ridiculing Vladimir Putin, who won 88 percent of the vote in Russia, and he said that that was a fixed election because President Putin made sure that no adversaries could challenge him, and also that he had fixed the press so the press wouldn’t cover his adversaries,” Kennedy said. “The Democratic Party succeeded in doing the same thing.”
Kennedy continued by praising Fox News for allowing him to voice his opinions and accused “Democratic networks” of deliberately keeping him off the airwaves.
“I haven’t been allowed on any of the Democratic networks: ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN. Fox has allowed me on. You have allowed me to speak, you debate me, you give me a platform even though you don’t agree with things that I say,” he said. “I think that’s the way the media is supposed to work.”
Earlier that day, Kennedy also criticized the DNC for positioning Harris as Biden’s successor on X. Kennedy suggested that it was a strategy to maintain control of its campaign finances.
“I call on the Democratic Party to return to its traditional commitment to democracy and exemplify it with an open process,” Kennedy wrote. “Instead of anointing a candidate hand-picked by DNC elites, the party should use neutral polling to identify the candidate who can best beat Donald Trump. The delegates should then select a nominee based on this information.”
That same day, Kennedy held a press conference at his family home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts to let the public know that he might seek the Democratic nomination for president if “party elders” urged him to.
“I’m the only presidential candidate who can beat Donald Trump,” he told reporters. “If I were them, I would do that.”
Kennedy accused the party of making it difficult to compete against Biden and criticized Democrats for rallying behind Harris. He described Harris as “one of the primary authors of the school-to-prison pipeline,” so he suggested that supporting her was a way for the party to maintain financial stability.
“I predicted that President Biden suffered from a degenerative condition that was not going to improve,” he said. “The reaction of the DNC to that obvious condition was to hide it from the American public.”
This comes over nine months after leaving the Democratic Party and accusing it of rigging the contest against him and for Biden.
